Essential Amazing Spider-Man, Vol. 11 by Bob Hall, Ed Hannigan, Bill Mantlo, Roger Stern, Ron Frenz

5.0

Absolutely peak Spider-Man, in terms of story and art. What more need be said? If you're reading this far into the ASM Essentials then you already know what they're about, and if you're coming to this fresh, it's as good a place as any to start. Each story is still fairly self contained and very little reading of any other series need be done to pick up the threads of each issue.

The only issue with this volume specifically is that it contains only half of the excellent 'who is Hobgoblin?' mystery. The story is long and sprawling, and the Essential collections aren't designed to contain key storylines, simply chronological issues, so this is understandable - but if you are coming fresh to the series with this volume, expect to have to pick up volume 12 if you want to read this particular story in its entirety. But really, when the quality is as high as it is at this point in Spidey's history, that's no bad thing.
