The Unwanteds by Lisa McMann
4.0

At age 13 the children of Quill are divided into one of 3 groups: Wanteds, Necessaries, and Unwanteds (artistic or creative kids). The Wanteds are sent to University, the Necessaries are put to work, and the Unwanteds are put to death. Fortunately for the Unwanteds, a magician named Mr. Today has made a world of magic where he rescues the Unwanteds to. The Unwanteds are taught how to be creative—something strictly forbidden in the city of Quill. Through their chosen art, they learn how to use magic to defend themselves. The day when they will be discovered by Quill is drawing near and they must prepare. For Alex, this is especially hard because his twin brother is a Wanted and he is compelled to save him from Quill. The story is fun and easy to read and I know my students will enjoy it.

“The Hunger Games meets Harry Potter” is the statement on the front of this book. That is a HUGE praise, but also made the book disappointing for me personally. I really enjoyed the book, but because my expectations were so high, the book fell a little short.
