Four Treasures of the Sky
by Jenny Tinghui Zhang
Such a well written book! The story, parts of which are loosely based on real events, illustrates the beginnings of anti-Chinese violence in America in the late 1800s, a topic that, at least in my history education, was not mentioned or highly glossed over. It was not surprising, but unfortunate to see that the same anti-immigrant tropes that are used today were in practice in the 1880s against Chinese laborers in mining communities. Though the experience of the main character is deeply sad in many ways, she maintains hope that she will regain her true identity and return to China someday.
