Stormbreaker
by Anthony Horowitz
6/3/18 UPDATE:
I've increased the rating for this book to 5* and I'll tell you why. So you need to understand my class first. I'm equal split boys to girls so sex/gender does not really come into it. They weren't necessarily engaged by [b:Street Child|1579906|Street Child|Berlie Doherty|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1185445392s/1579906.jpg|2778762], [b:Romeo and Juliet|18135|Romeo and Juliet|William Shakespeare|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1327872146s/18135.jpg|3349450] or [b:Wonder|11387515|Wonder|R.J. Palacio|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1309285027s/11387515.jpg|16319487] but I am not giving up on this class, who somehow got through school without a love of reading injected into the majority of them. They can tell me thousands of time they didn't like reading but I now have the experience of Stormbreaker under my belt and I know hat they're lying to me.
The action, the depth of the characters and the quality of this piece makes it the perfect class read for upper KS2. I'm genuinely surprised Horowitz didn't actually use the KS2 writing expectations to write this novel. It feels like he did and its the perfect model to teach KS2 writing so thank you!
When I met Horowitz, I genuinely didn't thank him enough. I knew him for his adult mystery novels and his television dramas (which I LOVED) and I knew him less for his children's novels. I honestly didn't know the impact he would have on my teaching career or how much my class would look up to him as an inspiration. I'm thanking you now, Horowitz.
I have fabulous spy stories as a result of Horowitz and I feel emotional as to how many children want to continue the Alex Rider series. (Yes, I already bought them all!) Children who hated reading want to read... That is the power of Horowitz. AND LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT ONE OF THE BOYS IN MY CLASS... I didn't know him last year but last year he hated reading and writing. His writing attitude has changed hugely. I don't know how that happeened but he's now on page thirteen of his spy story. He's also someone who used to hate reading and has now just read 70 pages of [b:Point Blank|224500|Point Blank (Alex Rider, #2)|Anthony Horowitz|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1375494413s/224500.jpg|1275528] overnight. I'm so proud and happy.
Because of my class' love for this and the inspiration it has provided, it has got to be 5*.
THANK YOU, HOROWITZ!

Wow. I can't wait to use this as the class read - 4.5*
I love how engaging this story was and I cannot wait to read the rest in the series. I sincerely hope my class are as engaged as I was.
I love Bond and I love spies so this book was perfect for me. The twists, turns and Horowitz wasn't afraid to face feelings, death and terrorism. Issues that a lot of children's books avoid. I truly commend this book for entwining so much into this novel.
It seems very exciting and leads onto the next one very nicely. I really hope the children pick these up too. I personally can't wait.
What makes this even better is how fab Horowitz is as a person so you can't help but love everything he writes. He's such an accomplished writer!!
