Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer

"How do we consume in a way that does justice to the lives we take? We are told to take only that which is given and never take more than we need."

While this novel is preachy and the message is delivered with wake-up slap to our senses, it is also beautiful. I felt as if I was there digging for leeks, or pulling grass for baskets. I felt part of the land; I felt the respect for the land that the author feels.

Perhaps a wake-up slap is what we all need in order to recognize the harm that is being done to the world around us, the natural world that we depend on for life. "We are all bound by a Covenant of reciprocity." It's about time we do our part to save this world.
