The Masque of the Red Death
by Edgar Allan Poe
“Even with the utterly lost, to whom life and death are equally jests, there are matters of which no jest can be made.”
Edgar’s a clever little sausage isn’t he?
Prince Prospero locks himself and a thousand of his friends into a fortress of excessive party and drink until the “Red Death” is over killing everyone on the outside. You can’t party your problems away though. Nor can you ever be fully in control.
I love the symbolism in the black room and the ebony clock. Excellent foreshadowing. Selfishly ignoring others peril is a dick move, so don’t do it. Don’t try to cheat death either because it’s patiently waiting to do its job.
It’s not as enjoyable for me as The Tell Tale Heart, at least not immediately so; but It’s a fantastic allegory no doubt about that. This one needs to sit with me.
Rating: 4 & 1/2 Stars (Rating might go up in time).
