Very much something great for starting a conversation about immigration, racism and poverty with kids, but also I'd imagine it'd be a great lifeline for children in very similar situation. It is not the lightest of books. It has some very bright moments, the ending for example was brilliant. But overall it is a very raw view of the life of a chinese immigrant child who's new to the country.

Reading the authors note at the end absolutely broke my heart. It's not a spoiler, but just gives context to the whole story. Apparently the novel draws from many experiences within Kelly's own life - even the worst parts.

The world's pretty screwed to put it bluntly. No child should have to live like this, but I hope this story helps those that need it, children and adults alike. Even if it's just a few lucky pennies worth of hope.
