Earthlings by Sayaka Murata

3.0

i should have looked up content warnings! having loved convenience store woman, i thought this would be similar, but it was much darker. that's on me. i was not expecting it to be as graphic as it was.

extremely shocking and frank. i read it in one sitting and it was written very well - murata has the ultimate handle on writing traumatised, mentally ill women up there with shirley jackson in my opinion. the dissociation and casual suicidal nature were as heartbreaking as they were extremely real. not many books yet have left me feeling legitimately nauseous, but this managed it. a persistent tenseness and nausea in me from the moment natsuki's first "after school" session right until the end. this book overall was not for me, but i understand its intentions. the satire (as with convenience store woman) is on point.
