Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers

4.0

This was one of my first introductions into Christian romance with the exception of some regency Kristi Ann Hunter novels that I have enjoyed in the past. I was super conflicted at the beginning. I couldn't get over the bullheadedness of Angel and especially of Paul. Both are characters filled with horrible pasts and self loathing and they could never quite seem to catch any understanding of the truth. And there is a lot of heavier tones in this novel. Angels past is grimy, abhorrent, and terribly sad. So in a way, I do understand why she never could believe herself worthy of any type of "redeeming love".

The ending though was very satisfying and symbolic. I think I enjoyed this book the most because of the religious symbolism. Michael, Angels husband, was very much a God figure and Angel a representation of ourselves. No matter how many times Angel hurt him, his hand was always stretched out waiting for her to come back. I also gained greater insight listening to the afterword with the author about how this book is supposed to show us that Gods version of love is different than the worlds version of love. A chord that struck a strong impression in my mind. If you go into this story understanding that, then I think you can take a lot of good messages from this book. In retrospect, hearing what she had to say about why she wrote this book made the book come together even more in my mind and ultimately made me like and appreciate it more.
