The Crown of Oaths and Curses
by J. Bree
THIS IS HOW YOU DO ENEMIES TO LOVERS!!! I Well actually more like just enemies, absolutely ZERO loving going on in this first book but it’s coming and I’m SO here for it! The slowest of slow burns that just kept giving HATRED and I ate it up.
This story follows Rooke (a witch) and Soren who are fated mates but Soren is high Fae and loathes witches with his entire being and would rather watch her burn alive than lay as much as a finger on her. He literally calls her “it” and “thing” and throws her in a dungeon hehe.
Rooke is already closing in on being one of my favorite FMCs I’ve read. She’s so sure of herself and confident and poised and never faulters after being continually knocked down. I love love love how J Bree written the inner monologues of her main characters. She makes you want to understand them so deeply and gets you so invested in them in a way that they don’t leave your head.
Soren…. Soren… I’ve never loved to absolutely hate a MMC so much in my entire life. He’s arrogant, prideful, narrow minded, and just down right infuriating…. Yet, it’s not in a way that makes you want to stop reading about him, I’m so intrigued by his character and cannot WAIT to see him do serious groveling in the next book.
Now this book won’t be for everyone as it is definitely slow to get into and not a whole lot happens in the first 40%, but it’s intentional and really helps the focus be on two insanely different POVs and back stories. The first half is very character driven and has a lot of world building and court politics. But my GOODNESS was it for me. However it being slower to get into is why I didn’t end up giving this 5 stars.
This book is honestly a conundrum to me… zero smut, zero romance, more of the mains characters inner monologue than dialogue, and MMC you hate… yet? YET, I was so obsessed with it and couldn’t put it down. I need book two NOW.
