super engaging! had me at hello, the writing is so good. the romance was very satisfying and Wu Zetian being so unhinged and merciless was SO refreshing. very dark at times but it was realistic and appropriate so I didn't mind it at all, but, the VERY END HAD ME SICK TO MY STOMACH??? HOLY HELL???? oh my God. anyway the world building I feel could be expanded on a little, but the whole book was super good overall with a very interesting premise, good pacing, convicting writing and relatable characters. starting the second book tonight, hope it doesn't destroy me lol
