So not since The Black Tower have I had such a dislikable set of characters in a James book. This was rough. Anyone with an iota of self respect is going to struggle with Octavia and probably like our murder victim more than usual.

But the Carpenter narrative makes this so worth reading. Also Dalgliesh taks a bit of step back in this book which I missed. Not sure how I feel about the new boy. But Kate is still one of my favourite and incredibly human characters.

And my god this is one of the only times thar Dalgliesh doesn't get his man! What shock.
