Anna by Amanda Prowse
2.0

Ah, Romance stories, it is for some but not for others. Anna by Amanda Prowse is the story of Anna, a little girl who learns about misfortune, death and grief at a really young age. A little girl who suffers at her brother’s hands and later on at her aunty’s, until she leaves home and tries for a better future, starting by looking for her dad. Anna’s life is an emotional roller coaster that just doesnt stop.

I had very high hopes for this book as it rates at almost 5 stars on Goodreads. I was not utterly dissapointed, just bored as I felt the story dragged on and on. Maybe its me and the fact that I don’t really believe in those bittersweet fairy tales anymore.

We get to read all about Anna’s life and the author just doesnt give her a break. She goes from one bad thing to the other and in order to keep her self sane, she manifests these two imaginary diary figures Fifi and Fox whom she considers ‘friends’ and confesses her troubles to them in her diary. I liked how her broken family aroused the need for her to have her own family by marrying and having kids. What was a bit disturbing though, as she was trying to have kids, Fifi and Fox turned from ‘friends’ to her ‘kids’ and that's where character development stopped. I yawned from boredom to the repeating thoughts of her wanting to have kids and how she needed to have kids and how it was important for her to have kids in order to have a complete life. Her hubsand on the other side, had his own miserable childhood trauma to deal with.

I am not an insensitive pig I swear, it’s just that I can only handle so much of a repeating misery in one book. It made the story slow and unreal and I had a really difficult time understanding Anna. I felt that she was childish, never satisfied with what she had and that her personality wasn’t developed as much. She kept carrying her childhood trauma through her entire life, without getting over it, like it happens in most stories. Now you gonna tell me that it is romance and what exactly was I expecting? Yes you are right but what I did like in this book was the feelings and descriptions of the other people. I had a very clear image in my head how everyone looked, their homes and even their facial expressions. That I liked and that's why I wasn’t entirely dissapointed.
