This book provided beautiful insight into what was and what might have been in 1950s San Fransisco, centring a young Chinese girl coming to grips with her sexuality and her future. I loved how deeply the historical aspects of this book are linked to the fictional characters' lives, and the strong sense of place evoked throughout. While the contextual tensions of the book play a major role, Lo maintains a mood of hope. At times, I wanted more exploration of the romance between the two main characters and particularly of the love interest.
