The Vagabond
by Colette
Colette knows not why the caged bird sings. Hope and optimism mean nothing to her; They are phantom lies that shroud the eyes of women everywhere who were trapped in loveless marriages to philandering, heartless men. She conveys this through her heroine Renee, who is a little sad, slightly pitiful and yet utterly charming and open to all of the freedom given to her by her divorce.
The character wrestles with a desire to be loved and to love again and with the knowledge that love is fleeting. To love again or not to love again? This is the question that she constantly goes back to, never seeming to give it a definite answer. She is playful and full of life, capable of giving all of her vibrancy to another soul through love and devotion and yet keeping herself in an emotional cage. Is this to protect herself or her potential lovers?
Colette leaves this up to you. Renee makes a decision in the end, is it the right one? This book is a solid four stars because it is the struggle of a woman who does not have the strength of the feminist movement behind her. She is alone in her mind with her thoughts, unable to confide in anyone and unwilling to lose herself to the man's world. 4/5
