Greta & Valdin
by Rebecca K Reilly
I think this was a great time for me to read this book. I absolutely LOVE literary fiction and Greta and Valdin reminded me of that. I really enjoyed reading about the lives of this chaotic but functional crazy family and how much they love each other while still having complicated issues and relationships. I honestly wish I was a part of the family because they seem so fun to be around but also deeply supportive and understanding. Aside from all the family stuff which is the main connection between the many characters in the novel, each character was still fully fleshed out and demonstrating the complexities of each of our individual lives and how it affects our interactions with others. Rebecca Reilly addresses so many different topics thoroughly out the novel from homosexuality to refugees to mental illness but does it in a way that makes a statement without taking away from the story itself - it’s not “overly political” but it’s undeniably political as these issues are such key drivers of the characters’ being and development. I saw someone describe this as a “cool girl book” and I 100% agree with that assessment and would befriend any girl I saw casually reading it in a park or something. I really liked this and the only reason I wouldn’t recommend it to some is because I acknowledge that it definitely isn’t a book for everyone and has a bit more of a specific target audience.
