I'm surprised to say that Gaybreaker was the Icebreaker I found a little less well-done. (Does it make any sense to compare these two? No, not at all, but that's the nature of the beast of reading Gaybreaker and Straightbreaker side-by-side with your friend.) I liked the grit and intensity of the two main characters' initial hatred, but it was solved in the span of one chapter with a we're-all-in-this-together party and then petered off into a questionable romance where I could see their physical chemistry, but not much of their emotional closeness. Graziadei was great at writing the crush stage but didn't really sell me on the main romance.
The storylines about Mickey's family issues and mental health were well-elaborated in their struggles, but their resolutions seemed slapshod and half-baked. I was surprised to realize how close to the end I was and how little had seemed to be resolved - there would be a magic fix, a relapse, and then a fix again.
And while I do appreciate that the author actually seems to know the sport, the hockey scenes were so jargon-filled that I could never follow the action. Apparently they play real good.
