The Deepest Grave: A Medieval Noir Mystery by Jeri Westerson

5.0

I've read a few of this series now and have always enjoyed the adventures of Crispen and Jack. I've not read the one that is a bit of a back story to Crispen and Phillipa Walcote so that's going on my to read pile as it seems very intriguing.

This time Crispen is trying to solve a murder that a 7 year old has been accused of. 7! You know you are reading a medieval mystery when the 7 year old is threatened with hanging. Gruesome stuff. The twists and turns around this are great. There's a secondary supernatural story as the bishop of St Modwens is convinced the dead are rising and having a wander around the graveyard. I found the information on the real St Modwen in the afterword fascinating and someone I've never heard of but I want to know more about this female saint. I love when a novel take me on an adventure of learning something I may not otherwise have known.

There's a race against time to save young Christopher from the gallows and find out if there really is a medieval zombie and I love how it all comes together. I very much loved the ending. these characters are growing and growing and I love seeing how they've developed into a little family. Excellent stuff and looking forward to picking up the next in the series
