A Caribbean Heiress in Paris by Adriana Herrera

5.0

This book had a fairly equal amount of history and romance - big amounts of both! I loved the way Adriana Herrera highlighted the way Britain/white men got their money and power, at the expense of black and brown people. The discussions of slavery, exploitation of workers (specifically women), and colonialism were so well done and worked perfectly in the context of the story. I loved the main character, Luz, and the way she expertly communicated the injustices she was experiencing but also knew how to make the most impact when calling out the people around her and their actions. I feel like I learned so much about this time period and you could really see all of the research Adriana put into this book.

I love a good marriage of convenience trope when it's done well and this one was; it hits differently in the context of a historical romance. I really liked Luz and Evan's relationship and loved how Evan kept surprising Luz with his awareness and acknowledgement of his undeserved wealth. I loved the discussions between Evan and Luz about microaggressions. I also am a sucker for Scottish men in romances so I was a big fan of Evan. This book was so spicy and the chemistry was off the charts!
