Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming
by Howard Rheingold, Stephen LaBerge
I read this in high school and was really amazed by it. I had many other pseudo-scientific books about interpreting dreams, most of which were feel good but not much actual help. This book was very different.
Following it's guide on how to approach lucid dreaming, I began by keeping a journal near my bed and writing what I dreamed about the minute I awoke. Within a matter of weeks, I was able to remember 3-4 complete dreams every night - who was in them, what we did, music I heard, places I went. It was startling how much this practice affected my dream state, it often felt like it was an entire separate part of my lived reality.
Beyond that, I started to be able to recognize symbols in my dreams and use those identifiers to "wake up" within dreams and start to control aspects of the dream. Quite a few involved flying or taking a "bad dream" and turning it completely around once I realized it wasn't real. It was astounding.
The book goes on to explain scientific studies that used lucid dream practice. Very interesting work and I'm sure there is so much more that could be explored on these topics. I've since read other books on the subject, but this is still the one that affected me the most.
