Every Octavia Butler I've read has impacted me, and this is no different. This book was not entirely what I was expecting it to be, but that is a good thing. There are so many nuanced and not so nuanced discussions in here moving from Nigeria to North America from the 1600's to the 1800's. Many discussions around what it means to be black, to be a slave, to be considered property and treated as such. Butler also looks at what it means to be human, what it means to be a god, the good and bad aspects of faith, and what it truly means to be a healer.
