Breaking Nova was an emotional, heart-wrenching read. I’ve come to discover Jessica Sorensen has an amazing gift of making me care about any characters, no matter how much it seems like I should dislike them.
Nova broke my heart on every page. I don’t know why I so strongly identified with her, especially because our lives are not even close to similar, but I loved this girl and her strength. Nova went through so much and she was still trying to find her way. I loved that we got to see Nova sink to her lowest, but then pull herself back up and try to move on. It will always be something that sticks with her, but she’s attempting to move forward.
Breaking Nova drew out every ounce of compassion I had, especially when reading about Quinton. Quinton got dealt a terrible hand, and I can understand why he blames himself. It’s normal human psychology, but it wasn’t his fault and I wanted so badly for someone to tell him that. The only problem is that the people who believe that don’t ever really tell him. Tristan says it like twice, but only half-heartedly. Nova would have screamed it from the rooftops, but he never told her what was going on!
The side characters also really made this book, but not in a good way. Delilah wasn’t a terrible person, but she had every chance to escape that life and then she went right back to it. I know that this is a story of a group of miserable people with baggage, but it was hard seeing Delilah who seemed like she had gotten herself together at the beginning fall back into a downward spiral.
I really liked this book, but what made me love the first part of the book completely broke me down at the end. I was going to be satisfied with Nova moving on with her life, because no one can every really save someone. Quinton is going to have to WANT to be saved, and he doesn’t. It’s what makes it so hard for me to be okay with the ending. On one hand I want Nova to run after him, and show him what it means to be really loved. However, he doesn’t want it, and he proved that when he left her that day.
Overall I really loved this book, but the fact that the book just ended on a cliffhanger really upset me. I would give this book 4 out of 5 stars because of the cliffhanger, and the fact that I think aside from the last chapter it would have been a good ending to an emotional read.
