The Beet Queen is harsh. The message appears to be "People don't change" with a side of "There is no redemption." And that's an unpleasant story to hear but it reflects reality much better than the usual narratives in fiction. Kudos to Erdrich for sticking to an uncomfortable kind of story.
Despite my admiration for Erdrich's artistic integrity, I was made uncomfortable by the characters' failure to grow and the story's many loose ends. My feelings about the book are ambivalent.
