Silk by Alessandro Baricco
5.0

There’s a reason this book was a #1 international bestseller that has been translated in over 25 different languages. There’s something so evocative about this book - in essence, it is about the power of a dream.

Herve Joncour leaves his little French town to travel to the end of the world in search of Silkworm eggs. At the end of the world (Japan), he finds a girl. She says nothing; she simply looks at him with her large, beautiful eyes. He travels home, but is unable to stop thinking about her. Back and forth, France to Japan, Herve Joncour makes the journey over and over, even as Japan falls into war.

Divided into very short chapters, often repetitive, a little haunting, but so poignantly written, I devoured this book in just a few hours. I can’t stop thinking about the line, ‘It is a strange sort of pain...to die of yearning for something you’ll never experience.’
