this was a very raw, real book. i felt for kiara from page on of the book. she had to live through so many painful experiences and had no great options. despite this, her character was still so loving and caring. watching her try her best to care for trevor really showed how much she still had to give. while i was really sad to see trevor get taken away, i do think it was a bit unsustainable for her to care for him as well as herself. i wish that we got to see more of the brother’s experience because he was clearly struggling and reacting in a very different way than her. it would have been interesting to see that a bit more flushed out!

the book felt a bit young-adulty to me and felt like everything was written to have an impact. i think the plot itself was already so heart wrenching that not every sentence needed to have a gut punch. the author is clearly talented but at times it was a bit much. other than that, i felt like there were weird gaps in the story–especially concerning the court case that just made me feel like i was missing parts of the book.
