This book was heartbreaking and left me feeling raw. It took me a long time to pick up this book (and to finish it) because I truly struggle with WW2 fiction; the atrocities of that time period make me feel ill. But Kristin Hannah really does a beautiful job of demonstrating the the importance of the hidden heroes, the women (and men) who were not fighting in the war but rather were at home fighting a quiet fight for humanity.
