angcar 's review for:
Woman, Eating
by Claire Kohda
slow-paced
I think this is a story that will solicit different reactions. Femme folk + consumption + familial trauma themes will have everyone reacting to this book differently. For me, this didn't really hit. But I liked the writing style (I think?) and the cover is gorgeous. I'd read more from the author.
Lydia doesn't really do much "eating" in this book. She certainly thinks about eating all the time, thinks constantly about the human food she can't eat, comes up with reasons to not eat the food her mom tells her to eat, gets sick when she eats "forbidden" human food .... yeah.
Her mom forcing both of them to eat pig blood because she believes that vampires are evil has all the setup to be a really interesting storyline, but I was left wanting. Mom barely features in this story. Moms storyline doesn't really resolve, Lydia basically drifts away from her. Did Mom eat Dad? We'll never know. Dad is in this even less. We never get to see his paintings, which was a letdown.
This story is for somebody! But not me.
