A Letter in the Wall
by Eileen Brill
Joan Dumann fears for her life after her former business threatens her. In an effort to tell her side of the story, she writes down everything. Revisiting her past provides a look into the life of this interesting woman.
I really enjoyed this story! It spans over several decades of Joan’s life. As a young girl and new mother, she often felt overwhelmed and like she had lost her own identity. I can relate a lot to this as a mom myself. She wanted more out of life, but at the time she was living in, women didn’t have many opportunities. It was frustrating to see her have to ask for permission from her husband, and I was happy to see her have some opportunities later in life (without giving too many spoilers). Joan was far from perfect and seeing her failures and flaws made this story very full-circle. Also, I loved the author’s note at the end, telling how she herself found a letter in the wall and that was the impetus for this story!
