Kingdom of the Feared by Kerri Maniscalco

4.0

I gave the Kingdom of the Wicked series another shot after reading and falling absolutely in love with Throne of the Fallen, and here I am at the end of that original trilogy feeling very glad that I did. No, it doesn't touch Throne of the Fallen in terms of how much I enjoyed it, but I did like seeing Maniscalco slowly turn a YA fantasy series towards fully adult fantasy romance.

That said, I've been dragging this trilogy over so many months that I already don't remember what happened where, and why, or even vaguely how, so I'm not going to embarrass myself by commenting on the plot, pace, etc. The romance, though? Excellent entertainment for sure. And let's be honest - that is why I'm here. Maniscalco gives me the gleeful and giddy enthusiasm I used to feel for Maas' books, and at this point I'm just happy to have found that feeling again. The rest is, as they say, confetti (no, I don't know who they are).

Would I recommend this trilogy? Sure, but you have to be willing to wrestle through what I have come to call The Cannoli Book (no that's not a compliment for book one). If you're someone who's okay sticking with a series that takes time to settle into what it wants to be, then by all means give it a go. Personally, I have Throne of Secrets pre-ordered and will be sticking with Maniscalco going forward, and very happily so.
