The Hike by Susi Holliday

4.0

Cat and her sister Ginny, along with their husbands set off on a hike in the Swiss Alps. None of them are experienced hikers yet they decide to hike without the use of GPS and just use a map instead. Not a great plan!

The story opens with two of the characters injured and shocked outside a local police station wanting to report the other two missing. But who is who?
This brilliant hook sucked me straight in and, coupled with the spectacularly beautiful setting of Villars-sur-Ollon (and I should know because I used to live there!!!), I was fully invested in this story from the get go.

The characters are utterly horrible, I couldn’t find any redeeming features about any of them but, goodness me, I really wanted to know exactly what they all might be capable of. The tension builds correspondingly to the characters climb up the mountains, the vertiginous drops making me almost hold my breath at times. Then there is also the addition of another sinister character whose identity is not revealed until the very end and who deepens the plot tension even further.

The plot twists multiple times and develops at cracking pace. Yes, it might be said that there needs to be a suspension of reality as you read but, in all honesty, I found it an utterly compelling read which kept me gripped 100% of the time. I did not guess the ending and I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. High five Ms Holliday - you absolutely nailed it!!
