rmdcoiso 's review for:
The Mushroom at the End of the World: On the Possibility of Life in Capitalist Ruins
by Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing
This is a hard book to ingest - heavy on academic, conceptual language that attempts to make some theoretical connections between mushrooms and post-capitalism.
It is like listening to a super interesting conversation over wine with people that clearly know a lot about what they're talking about. In the end, you might feel like there wasn't much more than a few interesting ideas thrown up in the air - and if that's the point, then the book has succeeded tremendously.
The stories do open your mind slightly to these different interpretations, chapter by chapter.
The title is misleading, however, in that it doesn't get to the part about imagining a post-capitalist society - it simply plants the seeds for seeing the world - and its future, a little different.
I value the book for that, and for the excellent contribution to many future conversations about mushrooms and post-capitalism. With wine, naturally.
