Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Perfectly fine light entertainment for Christmas. But I find the enormous status this book seems to have in the English speaking world, hard to understand.

Two unexpected mental references came to mind while reading it: Icelandic sagas - not in any of the literary quality, but in terms of the strict honour society these upper class characters live in, and are bound by. At one point, there is even mention of a possible duel to rectify an injury to the family honour.

The other is to the TV shows "Real Housewives of Orange County/Beverly Hills/New York City", etc: Very little happens and no one does much of anything, except going to parties and visiting each other, but what little does happen is endlessly talked about and rehashed.

So, not my cup of tea.
