I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak

2.0

I stuck with this story to see how it ended; my curiosity was strong for wanting to know WHO was the messenger. I suppose the cover of the book provides the answer. And if you ever saw the movie The Truman Show, this book might remind you of that movie.

First of all, I was not attracted to the characters though I was interested in Ed Kennedy, the main character who receives the messages. I did like the method of providing the messages (using the aces of a card deck) and the wording of the messages (all concise clues but non of them providing actual actions). However, I wasn't a fan of some of the ways that Ed 'solved' the clues, despite the solutions all having positive resolutions.

Ultimately, though, the author used a conceit that struck me as an easy way to resolve this tale. I believe the author knew from the start how his story would unfold, so the conceit wasn't a last minute save on his part. On the positive side, I did take a moral from this story, which is that we each have the power to be in charge of our own stories, our own destinies.
