The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

5.0

This novel was my first historical fiction read. I tend to stay away from this genre. Most of the time, the topics are deep and upsetting. Also, much of the genre is based on true events, and it can be tough to get through! However, I’m so glad I read this book. It moved me most remarkably.

My emotions were running wild during this read. From the copious amount of grief to love, I couldn’t stop myself from bawling! I flew through this book. I finished it in under 24 hours. I had to know how the story ended for our MCS. There was the perfect amount of tension and adrenaline-inducing moments!

The Nightingale is a compelling story about women during the Nazi occupation of France during WWII. There’s heartbreaking violence, families split apart, and selfless acts of bravery. I loved this angle of the war. In school, we focus so much on events in Germany. It was refreshing to read something different about the war.

Isabelle was so courageous and inspiring. I loved her from the very beginning. Vianne was annoying. I just didn’t like her! Her daughter, Sophie, was more likable than her! However, she became more tolerable towards the end. I can appreciate the lengths she went to protect the children.

I highly recommend this novel. It's one of my all-time favorites now.
