fionasongbird 's review for:
Uncle Tom's Cabin
by Harriet Beecher Stowe
The history curriculum I've been teaching to my 2nd graders for the last 4 years talks about the impact of Uncle Tom's Cabin, but I'd never read the actual book. I'm glad I finally did.
The pathos of this story is undeniable. Families split up, likely to never see each other again. Slaves facing an uncertain future at the auction. The cruelty shown by slave owners who have absolute power over their slaves. It's all the harder to read knowing that the events of the story are based on things that actually happened at that time.
Stowe shows great understanding of the culture and people of her time. Her social commentary is incisive and her insights into the human character are profound.
