Looking for Alibrandi by Melina Marchetta

5.0

I put off reading this book for a long time. Mainly because I had to study the movie in high school and while I didn't hate it, I certainly didn't want to see, read or think about that story for years afterward (Anyone else feel that way about VCE texts?).
So when this one came my way, and I realised that enough time had passed for the horrors of high school to fade into the mists of memory, I decided to see if the book really is as goods as I have always been told.
Not only is this a great Australian book but it is one that has stood up really well to the 20-odd years since it was written. The Story of Josephine Alibrandi growing up, searching for identity, working at Macca's, accepting her family and heritage, gaining and losing her first love and her final year of high school is one that most people can relate to, even if they don't have Jose's Greek background.
