The Shadow of the Wind
by Carlos Ruiz Zafón
Thought I was going to love this book and sometimes I did.
It’s a wonderfully imaginative and creepy and thrilling work of magical realism that unfortunately has aged pretty poorly. Lots of groping and imprisoning in various metaphorical and literal senses for the women of this story, who are not exactly feminist icons. It’s not the best. Given it’s set in the early 20th century and was published in 2005, I take it all with a grain of salt. But still. I kept grimacing
