Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik

5.0

This is a brilliant novel.

It is the interwoven tale of three young women, Miryem, Wanda, and Irina, who despite being in very different situations, are all trapped by cirumstance. But all three of them learn to seize opportunity, often using wits and hard work to make their own opportunities, and use their new agency and power to make better lives for themselves.

Although Miryem, Wanda, and Irina and the heroes of this story, there is a delightful cast of characters, many with POV chapters, who are just as fully developed.

All the settings: the winter forest, the Stayk glass mountain, the city of Vysnia, are so well-written they were like characters themselves.

Spinning Silver is full of agency, wits, hard work, and growth. It is also full of sacrifice, mistakes, and hard choices. It's an easy book to read, but it gives you plenty to think about.

And there are delightful lines of prose throughout.
