The Teller of Small Fortunes by Julie Leong

3.0

Julie Leong has crafted a simply sweet uplifting story. It is the tale of Tao, a young woman self-exiled from her home. Tao is the teller of small fortunes, which is how she makes her livelihood while traveling from town to town. Along the way she meets Mash and Silt, two strong men who are much kinder than their brawny bodies and weapons would suggest.

They strike up a conversation and all agree it would be fine for them to accompany Tao, at least into the next town, where they meet Kina, an aspiring baker. All four take to the roads together with one goal, to assist Mash in finding his 4 year old daughter Leah who, as best as he can tell, was abducted six months prior from his family farm.

And so begins the adventures of this quartet, during which each will learn more about themselves, Tao will wind up returning home, her friends will attempt to rescue her from that semi-forced return home, and - this being a simply sweet uplifting story - all queries will be resolved.

Sometimes it is simply nice to read an uplifting story where there is some suspense, no violence, and good people persevere. This is such a story!
