If on a Winter's Night a Traveller
by Italo Calvino
If on a Winter's Night was a game changer for me: I realized that a novel can be playful and fun without sacrificing a story. The novel itself is a love letter to the art of reading and loving books. As this is Calvino, there's much more and the novel is a philosophical treatise on language, with a clever ending.
Strangely enough a lot of people I've recommended If on... to have returned it saying that it was a difficult novel but I find it flowing so I guess this is not the easiest Calvino to tackle but it is one of his essential novels.
