To Have and to Hoax by Martha Waters

4.0

First regency romance book down and ready to read more from this author! Regency romance has never been something where I’m like yes, give it to me, but this series has managed to catch my attention.

The entire book is a collection of plotting and schemes and a lot of “does she know that I know she knows” between a couple who just doesn’t want to admit that they are still hopelessly in love with each other. Violet and James are a couple who had a big divide in their relationship, but never really stopped loving each other, but also don’t really know how to say that. So, instead, they come up with ways to frustrate and irritate the other as a means to catch their partner’s attention with every scheme pulling more and more people into their shenanigans.

I listened to the audiobook for this and wasn’t a big fan of the male narrator, but obviously that did not turn me away from the story itself. Eventually, I just got used to his terrible accent and moved on. Once I did that, I was able to just focus on the story and enjoy it. The plot was funny and the character banter was something I loved. The two of them snarking each other was hilarious.

Martha Waters is a new author for me and one I’m glad I finally gave into peer pressure and read. This book was quite enjoyable and I look forward to continuing on to the rest of the series.
