A Study in Scarlet

The meeting of Sherlock and Watson stands as one of the most momentous occasions in modern literature. Both the quality of writing and the impressively compelling story-telling are instructive in the future success the pair would continue to see.
It is interesting to read Holmes in order of publication now and recognize that, starting with Scarlet and then The Sign Of Four, Conan-Doyle originally relied heavily on a method of including both Sherlock's conclusions and an in-depth back story as a sort of two-for-one novel, mystery and romance double feature. It obviously worked out quite well, although, for my part, I prefer slightly the shorter works.
