Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson

challenging emotional informative sad medium-paced

4.5

9.25/10

An incredible, difficult, and necessary read.

Wilkerson makes a compelling argument that racism in America is a manifestation of caste, then dissects how caste exists and gets perpetuated.

The concepts build on each other very well. The examples are plentiful and varied. The comparison to other caste systems provides a deeper context, too.

The book did leave me wondering why caste systems are so imbedded in humanity to begin with, but that’s probably a topic for another book.

Also, trigger warning for pretty much every form of violence/racism.
