A children's morality tale with a notion more for stern rebuke than gentle coddling, this book nontheless has many fascinating elements and characters to it that will enchant the imagination. I read it as a girl and upon re-reading it as an adult found that I had certain passages almost memorized!
In the tradition of Ye Olde Englishe morality children's books, Kingsley does not shy away from presenting cruelty, hardship, and death in his book. But he balances it out with moments of tenderness and sympathy, and the strange and wonderful world he presents in the meanwhile is well worth the more preachy bits.
