Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao

5.0

here are my reasons as to why I gave this book the rating:

- chinese setting and culture written by a chinese person
- not a single white person found which personally I think is a delight
- main character being an absolute menace to society (as she should) and fighting for what she thinks it’s right
- not having to go through the whole moral crisis bc the character just don’t give a shit about “good morals” (genz not being afraid of going up against the government vibes)
- main characters said to be threats actually being dangerous (yk not like just calling them assassins and them not killing a single fly the whole book)
- the pure satisfaction of reading about woman destroying patriarchy
- POLYAMORY REP !!!! REALLY POLY REP
- the love triangle is solved in the only right way possible that love triangles should be solved
- that said, it queer rep as a whole, there are dialogues and thoughts about sexuality, relationships and gender
- also all characters are hot if any of them punched me in the face I would thank them and say sorry for putting my head in front of their fists
- >>>COMMUNICATION<<< if you are like me you’ll probably melt of satisfaction reading this book bc there are plots/tropes you know are going to mess everything up, specially relationship-wise, but instead of letting it transform into a big pile of shit the characters communicate with each other about their feelings (it should not be so rare, but well)
- loving and supporting relationship
- the scary one being a soft dork (but still being capable of doing scary things if needed)
- GIANT ROBOTS
- plot twists that make you clutch your pearls
- not having the whole “they always treated me like shit but I’m going to forgive and forget bc they are family” trope
- this might be sus to say as one of the motives I love this book but: the torture scenes really get heavy and gruesome, they make a lot of “mafia” books seem like child play
- again, woman being violent because after all I support women’s rights but most importantly I support women’s wrongs (tbh are not wrong, they had it coming)

and to top all: THE AUTHOR IS A TOTALLY DORK SWEETHEART AND QUEER they are awesome and that makes everything in the book even better, I highly recommend you check their social media
