Deadly Illusion by Kathy Lockheart

This book, was absolutely heartbreaking. Ugh. But it was really good.

The main plot is a girl who has a tragic family past, moves to Chicago and meets this wonderful man who she begins a relationship with. And all is beautiful and wonderful, until one day it isn't. And he becomes violent. And she gets caught in a cycle of abuse, trying to leave and going back. Until one day enough is enough and she tries to leave for good, but he won't let her go. Her brother and a new friend, who just happens to be an MMA fighter, work hard to protect her.

While this story goes have a happily ever after, it is not without a lot of tragedy and loss. The amount of trauma these characters go through is just, it's a lot. I cried throughout this entire book and definitely need to go watch a Disney movie to pull me out. But it's a really good book. It really takes you through the stages of abuse in relationships. How it starts small and the escalation. The isolation and manipulation. It's so easy to judge stories when we hear about them, but when you're in the situation, you don't realize how slowly it starts.

This book was a really good read. I enjoyed it, and I'm glad we got a happily ever after in the end. Definitely check trigger warnings and know that there is a lot of trauma in this book.
