Anyone who knows me is fully aware of my adoration of The Giver, I still reread and buy copies for people frequently as I feel it was the first philosophy book I had ever read and that it stands as a great introduction to the subject even for adults. The main problem I have had with these sequels is the magic inclusion and seemingly huge straying away from critical thinking to simpler moralistic lessons. I loved the idea of Gathering Blue, the different world in the same timeline with a similar problems was great, but yuck then magic. And this would be no issue in a different series but I did not think I signed up for the X-Men when I picked Lois Lowry. I still so enjoy her writing, dialogue, and world creation, but my rating feels like a crush hangover - too generous.
