Remedial Magic
by Melissa Marr
I'm giving this book a four star review because while it did suffer for some of its flaws, I blew through all of it so quickly that I had to force myself to slow down near the end. I found the romance between the potential lesbian couple very compelling, and even the heterosexual romance was interesting to me. I was thrilled to find a new magical world to immerse myself in, and even more excited to find a queer romance with magic!
After finishing it, I did realize that I had been pushing down some discomfort at finding that there wasn't as much diversity as I would have hoped for, especially in what was marketed as a diverse novel. I found myself uncomfortable with the lack of characters of color, and upset that the ones we did have seemed relegated to background status. I really hope to see more diversity in the next book, which I still plan to read--- but with a more cautious eye.
Another reason I gave this book four stars is that despite its flaws, I am antsy to read the next installment, and found myself hoping that there would be more than a few books.
