Atmospheric; the setting is a character itself. California coast: sandy, salty, windy, palm trees strewn. A throwback to nostalgic times gone by, both the 1950s and 1980s. It's a perfect summer read for these two reasons. At the very end we finally see a few extremely small nods to the absolutely MESSED UP social systems that ruled the times (still do, but hey). The book needed a lot more of that IMO because the main characters were obnoxious for most of the book. Still a compulsive read if you're not looking for anything too challenging!
