It started a bit slow for me, but I actually devoured it (if you check how long it took—spoilers: 11 days). Maybe it's because I’d just read Crown of Midnight and wanted to know what happens next, who knows? Either way, I’m glad I read this as the third book in the series, not the first.
It was great to finally learn more about Celaena’s past and connect the dots with things I’d already read, made it more fun! Starting with this one might have made me like her less, so I’m happy I followed the (publication) order Sarah J. Maas recommends.
I dreaded the ending, though, because I knew what was coming, and still cried. How could you not? It was heartbreaking :(
Overall: great read! If you’re a chronological reader, feel free to start with this before Throne of Glass. But if you want the emotional gut-punch (like I did), reading it after Crown of Midnight hits differently. Reading it third worked perfectly for me!
